What to Wear to Your Senior Portrait Session

One of the most common questions I get from seniors and their parents is: “What should I wear?” It’s a great question — and honestly, the right outfits can make a huge difference in how your photos look and feel. The good news? You don’t need to overthink it. Here’s everything you need to know to show up feeling confident and camera-ready.

Start With How You Want to Feel

Before you start pulling things from your closet, think about the vibe you’re going for. Do you want your photos to feel polished and classic? Relaxed and natural? Bold and editorial? Your outfits should reflect you — not a trend, not what someone else wore. These images are going to last a lifetime, so wear something that feels authentic to who you are right now.

General Guidelines (For Every Session Type)

No matter where we’re shooting, a few universal tips apply:

·      Bring 2–3 outfit options. Variety gives your gallery depth and keeps things interesting.

·      Avoid busy logos and graphics. They date quickly and pull attention away from your face.

·      Fit matters more than brand. A well-fitted outfit from anywhere will always photograph better than something ill-fitting.

·      Think about color. Soft, muted tones and classic neutrals tend to photograph beautifully. Bold colors can work great too — just avoid neon or overly bright shades that can cast color onto your skin.

·      Don’t forget the details. Jewelry, belts, hats, and shoes can elevate a simple outfit. Bring options.

·      Steam or iron your clothes beforehand. Wrinkles show up more on camera than you’d expect.

Studio & Styled Sessions

Studio sessions are all about clean, timeless elegance. This is your chance to go a little more polished.

·      Opt for classic silhouettes — fitted blazers, wrap dresses, tailored trousers, or a simple blouse.

·      Textures photograph beautifully in studio light — think knit, lace, velvet, or denim.

·      Solid colors and subtle patterns work best against a clean backdrop.

·      For a more editorial look, don’t be afraid to go bold with a structured jacket or a statement piece.

·      Hair and makeup should feel like a refined version of your everyday look — not overdone, not underdone.

Outdoor Sessions

Natural light is incredibly flattering, and outdoor settings call for outfits that feel relaxed and effortless without looking sloppy.

·      Flowy fabrics move beautifully in an outdoor setting — maxi skirts, linen tops, and sundresses all work wonderfully.

·      Earth tones, sage greens, warm creams, and dusty blues complement natural surroundings.

·      Avoid all-white outfits in bright sunlight — they can blow out and lose detail.

·      Layer it up. A denim jacket, cardigan, or oversized flannel can add dimension and give you more outfit variety without a full change.

·      Comfortable shoes matter. We may be walking, so make sure your footwear works for the terrain — and bring a backup pair if you want a dressier look for certain shots.

Urban Sessions

Urban environments are dynamic and edgy — your outfits can reflect that energy.

·      Structured pieces photograph well against architectural backgrounds — think leather jackets, joggers with a fitted top, or a sleek monochromatic look.

·      Street style works here. This is the session where you can lean into your personal style the most.

·      Bold colors and patterns can pop beautifully against brick, concrete, and murals.

·      Sneakers, boots, and loafers all work great for urban shoots — this is the one session where fashion-forward footwear really shines.

·      Accessories are your friend. Hats, sunglasses, layered necklaces, and bags can all add personality to your look.

A Note for Parents

I know it can feel overwhelming helping your senior pull together their looks — but try to encourage them to wear what they love. When seniors feel like themselves, it shows in their photos. Confidence is the best thing they can wear, and my job is to bring that out of them no matter what they have on.

If you have questions about specific outfits before your session, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m always happy to help you style your looks ahead of time so you can show up on session day feeling completely prepared — and excited.
